Yamanaka Onsen with rich history

Yamanaka Onsen is a hot spring located in Kaga city of Ishikawa Prefecture.  The water rich in calcium, sodium, and sulfate is said to be helpful for neuralgia, chronic gastrointestinal diseases and joint pain.  It is said that the hot spring was discovered during the Heian period (794-1185) and has been beloved from then. The area where the hot spring was found is now a public bathouse, ‘’Kikunoyu’’ (Chrysanthemum Hot Water).  Kikunoyu has an elegant interior with influences from West Asia.  It is said to be Tenpyo-style in design.  The men’s bath is waist high and the women’s bath has a shallow area and a deep area.  In the men’s bath, the wall is decorated with tiles replicating part of the ‘’Yamanaka Onsen Emaki’’ (Yamanaka Onsen Picture Scroll).  Guests can enjoy the history of the hot spring while bathing.  Kikunoyu is open from 6:45AM to 10:30PM.  Fees are 440 yen for adults, 130 yen for elementary and middle school students, 50 yen for children. Kikunoyu baths are divided by gender and there is a large rest area called ‘’Yamanakaza’’ between them.  There is also a footbath and marionette clock.  On weekends and holidays in the Yamanakaza, guests can enjoy Yamanakabushi songs, geisha dance, Yamanaka Bushishikinomai four seasons dance, traditional entertainment and Yamanaka Onsen-engi exhibitions. In addition to Kikunoyu, there are other inns offering day-bathing without having to spend the night.  Each inn and hot spring have different hours and fees, please check their websites for more information.  Each inn’s website can be found on Yamanaka Onsen’s main website.

Praise for Basho

Yamanaka Onsen was also beloved by poet Matsuo Basho and is known as one of Basho’s three favorite hot springs.  Several facilities including Basho-no-yataka (Exhibition hall) and Basho-do are named after the poet. Yamanaka Onsen is surrounded by nature and the four seasons can be enjoyed here.  Exploration of the Kakusenkei River is recommended for enjoying the area.  After crossing the Korogi Brige, there is a 1.3km promenade where visitors can enjoy a walk surrounded by greenery and the river.  Downstream is the famous Kurotani Bridge.  At the end of the promenade is the Ayatori Bridge which has a unique shape.  Visitors can cross the bridge or view it from afar.
