The museum is unique by exhibiting a collection of kirie (paper cutout) works created by more than 10 top-class artists including Aoyama Hina, a paper lace artist who was selected as one of the "100 Japanese People that the World Respects" by Newsweek magazine in 2009. Also works of Sakai Atsumi are displayed, and these works are known for their collaboration of kirie and light. This effect is accomplished by putting kirie in a laminated glass frame and then passing light through it. The museum was actually opened recently in 2010.
The hands-on workshop is held for an admission fee, and only for a party of 10-20 visitors. The opening hours are seasonally different: 9:30-17:30 (April to September), and 10:00-17:00 (October to March). Last admission: 30 minutes prior to closing time. It is closed on Wednesday, but open if Wednesday falls on a national holiday.
The museum is located in Yamanashi Fujikawa Craft Park. The park is designed according to different landscapes from season to season in a Japanese-style garden with a relocated old Japanese-style house. Outdoor facilities include a canoe river, a picnic ground, a playground, and tennis courts. A memorable day with lots of fun for families with kids!
By taxi it takes 5 minutes from Shimobe-onsen Station on the JR Minobu Line. By car it is a 30 minute drive from Masuho Interchange on the Chubu-Oudan Expressway, or a 50 minute drive from Shinshimizu Interchange on the Shin-Tomei Expressway.
