What is Tokugawa Garden

Tokugawa Garden is a Japanese garden located in Aichi Prefecture’s Nagoya city, Higashi district, Tokugawa town. It was originally the mansion of the Owari Tokugawa family and vestiges of the samurai residence remains on the main gate. Adjacent to the garden are the Tokugawa Art Museum, which exhibits the "Tale of Genji Scrolls" and the Nagoya-shi Hosabunko Library, which holds the Tale of Genji manuscripts. The garden is centered around a pond and symbolically illustrates the natural landscape of Japan, a condensed version of a waterfall flowing to the ocean. The Daimyo Gardens of the Edo period (1603-1868) were mostly created in this style as well. The Tokugawa Garden has rich landscape and the majesty of the Daimyo Gardens can be seen here. Visitors can enjoy the various terrain, the woods and rock formations. The four seasons can be enjoyed here as well – Peony from mid to late April, Iris from early to late June, and fall foliage in late November. There is a restaurant where visitors can enjoy French cuisine surrounded by lush nature, looking out at Ryusenko pond, as well as a museum shop where traditional crafts and sweets can be purchased.
