What is Inuyama City Cultural Museum, Karakuri Tenji-kan

Inuyama City Cultural Museum is the annex of Inuyamashi Bunka Shiryokan (Inuyama City Cultural Assets Museum). It is close to Inuyama Castle and is an easily accessible stop if you are near the castle. On exhibit at the museum are the Yama (Parade floats) used in the Inuyama Festival (First Saturday and Sunday in April), the mechanical dolls placed on the floats and various arts and crafts handed down in Inuyama city. In particular, there are 10 mechanical dolls exhibited that are representative and valued as of the origin of manufacturing in Aichi Prefecture. The museum is also the business trip workshop of the 9th generation Karakuri Ningyo (Mechanical doll) master Tamaya Shohei, and the 10 dolls are his works. The workshop has dolls in the making as well as dolls mid-repair and it is interesting to see the structure and mechanism of these dolls. Every Friday and Saturday, Tamaya Shohei holds a demonstration of mechanical doll making as well as on Saturdays and Sundays, a demonstration on the tea serving dolls. The Chahakobi Ningyo (Tea serving dolls) has a wind-up mechanism made from the beard of whales. The tea serving dolls carry tea to the customer and when the customer is done drinking, will bring the teacup back to the original location. It is considered to be the root of the modern robot.

From Nagoya Station, take the Meitetsu express train to Inuyama Station or Inuyama-yuen Station. 15 minute walk from either station. It is located 100 meters south of Inuyama-jo Castle.
