What is Doburoku Festival Museum

The Doburoku Festival Museum celebrates the Doburoku Festival occurs yearly from late September to October in Shirakawago.  The exhibit features dolls and models to reproduce parts of the festival and not only shows an overview of the event, but also illustrates rituals of the festival as well as its transition over time.  Video screenings of the actual Doburoku Festival are also available. The museum is located within Shirakawa Hachimanjinja Shrine and visitors can also view treasures of the shine.  Visitors are also treated to a free tasting of Doburoku sake.  Please note that the museum is closed during the actual Doburoku Festival season as well as December to March.。

Doburoku Festival

Every autumn, the Doburoku Festival is celebrated to and Doburoku sake (Rice wine) is presented to God in prayer for Gokokuhojyo (Wealth in bumper crops), Kanai Anzen (Safety of the home), and Sato-no-Heiwa (Peace to the village).

On the opening day of the festival, each shrine celebrates with Shishimai (Traditional lion dance), folk songs and dance surrounding history, ritual and folklore.  Doburoku sake is served to people as Omiki (Sacred sake to be presented to God).  Doburoku is made using a unique technique handed down from ancient times.  It is processed at the shrine's brewery in snowy, late January.  Doburoku has been used for over 1300 years in the festival.
