Uonuma Travel Guide

Uonuma is a region located in southeastern Niigata prefecture.  It includes the cities of Uonuma, Nagaoka, Kashiwazaki, and Tokamachi.  Uonuma is so famous for producing delicious rice that it even has its own brand, Uonuma Koshihikari rice.

This area is surrounded by lovely nature and shows different expressions depending on the season. There are areas which get as much as 3 m of snow in the winter. Hot spring areas such as Echigo-Yuzawa Onsen and Matsunoyama Onsen are the perfect spots for winter. Recently, in order to make use of the spacious area, we have held an art event once every three years, and also opened art related facilities such as the Echigo Tsumari Art Field.  Besides that, it is packed with charm, culture, and local cuisine unique to the heavy snowfall region.

It is convenient to have a car for getting around this area but some spots are accessible by bus or train.  From major cities, you can get here by bullet train or car.  From Tokyo it takes about 3 hours by car.  The nearest station by bullet train is Urasa Station and from Tokyo station it takes 1 hour and 30 on the Joetsu bullet train.
