What is Echigo Tsumari Art Field

Once every three years in the Echigo Tsumari area, the ‘’Echigo Tsumari Art Triennial’’ arts festival is held.  The collective area where the art festival takes place is referred to as the Art Field.  The basic principle of the event is said to be ‘’Humans are naturally encapsulated’’, and is an event that resurrects ‘’sleeping’’ art in the area and presents them to the world.  This regional development has gained a high reputation home and abroad as the ‘’Tsumari method’’.

6 Areas of the Echigo Tsumari Art Field

There are 6 areas of Echigo Tsumari Art Field:  Tokamachi, Kawanishi, Tsunan, Nakasato, Matsudai, Matsunoyama.

Tokamachi uses an elementary school that has been closed down.  The entire building is used and becomes a picture book called ‘’Ehon to Kinomi no Bijyutsukan’’.  Kawanishi displays popular art work at its Nakago Green Park.  Tusnan features a converted elementary school where women make home-cooked meals using ingredients from the mountains.  Nakasato features the ‘’Potemkin’’ Park which was a playground that had become a dumping ground.  Finnish architects created this beautiful park which has white gravel and play equipment which symbolizes the 20th century such as iron, wood and car tires.  The Matsudai area has the molting house made by the Nihon University College of Art sculpture course. Over 2.5 years, 3000 people chiseled and created the molting house.  It is also possible to stay overnight at this house.  Matsunoyama area has the Daigogenjikogen plateau.  Various works from the art festival are exhibited here and visitors can enjoy art while walking through nature.
