Western Izu has lovely nature and you can enjoy it at places like Izu-no-kuni Panorama Park, where you can see Mt. Fuji, Dogashima Cave Excursion Boat, where you can take cruises around the coast of Western Izu which has many beautiful caves, and the Joren Falls which is selected as one of the hundred best waterfalls in Japan. People interested in history should certainly visit the many cultural facilities such as the former site of Toi Kinzan Gold Mine, which was the second most productive mine after Sado Mine in Niigata prefecture, and the Nakase Old House, the mansion of a Meiji era clothier.
It is convenient to have a car for getting around this area. There is no railway service in the southern part of the region so it is best to get a rental car. From major cities, you can take bullet or conventional trains to Numazu station. If taking the bullet train from Tokyo, please change to the Tokaido Main line for Numazu at Mishima Station. It takes about one hour. If you don’t go by bullet train, it takes about 2 hours and 20 minutes.
