Iwami is a region located in the central part of Shimane prefecture. It includes the cities of Oda, Gotsu, the counties of Iishi and Ochi, and the cities of Hamada and Masuda.
For sightseeing, we recommend the Iwami Ginzan World Heritage Center, which underscores the precious history of the silver mine, Yunotsu Onsen, with a long history as a hot spring resort, and the traditional Iwami Kagura, a unique “kagura,” or theatrical performance, from this area. Ryugenji Mabu Mine Shaft Tour allows you to walk through the tunnels actually used in the Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine. If you are interested, you should go and see the traces made by chisels used in the mining activities of the time.
You can get around this area by train or car. If you come by train, you can take the Sanyo Main line and the Sanko line. You can use the Hagi Iwami Airport or the Izumo Enmusubi Airport. The northern part of the area is close to Izumo Enmusubi Airport so you should chose the airport based on where you want to go. From Haneda Airport in Tokyo, it takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes.
