About Kiyomizu-dera Temple
This temple was founded in the year 587 by Sonryu Shonin on the mountainside of Zuikozan, and is a temple that enshrines the Juichimen Kannon Bosatsu (11-faced statue of Kannon). Shortly following its founding it fell out of usage, however in 806 it was revived and then in 847 it was converted to a Tendai sect temple by Ennin who dropped in for a visit following his return from ancient China.
Since its founding it flourished due to deep faith from the Imperial court and other powerful families, but due to wars it was entirely destroyed. However, following the warring periods it was restored by the Mori family and successive generations of Matsue feudal lords, and the San-in region’s best (and now only) 3-storied pagoda was installed here. In the spring you can see Yoshino cherries and in the fall there is beautiful fall foliage, and the shrine attracts many worshippers every year. On the shrine approach road there is a ryokan where you can try an unusual treat: vegetarian cuisine made using no meat or fish that was originally derived from the dietary restrictions of Buddhist monks, so if you come to visit you should definitely try it.
The admission period for the main hall is from 9:00 to 17:00. Entrance times for the grounds vary depending on season, from April-October it is from 6:00 to 18:00, and from November to March it is 6:00 to 17:00. Entrance to the grounds is free, however the treasure museum is 300 yen (open dates: 4/26~5/6, 11/1~11/10), and the Komyo Tower and Shoin Garden are 600 yen each (includes green tea).
The 3-story pagoda costs 200 yen to enter. Please note that in order to enter you must fill out the following application in advance.
