What is the Mizuki Shigeru Road?
The Mizuki Shigeru Road is an 800 meters long street stretching out from the JR Sakaiminato Station. The road was named for Mizuki Shigeru, the cartoonist of the popular comic "Gegege-no-Kitaro," who was born in Sakaiminato. On the street, 153 bronze statues of the yokai characters (supernatural monsters) of the "Gegege-no-Kitaro," are situated along the street. You can find the Kitaro-chaya tearoom and other shops providing special Kitaro (the main character of the Gegege-no-Kitaro) goods and foods associated with Kitaro: Kitaro-yaki (Oban-yaki, Japanese baked cake), breads in shape of characters like Kitaro, Medama-Oyaji, Nezumu-Otoko, Ittanmomen, and Sunakakebaba. There are many other amenities connected with Mizuki Shigeru and Kitaro, such as the Mizuki Shigeru Museum and the Yokai jinja Shrine. Even if you are not a fan of Kitaro, walking the street and looking around the shops is a rewarding experience. Sometimes on the streets you will encounter a delightful yokai-a person wearing a cartoon character costume dressed as one of the supernatural monster creations of Mizuki Shigeru. A guidebook to the all the kinds of yokai, is sold at the Sakaiminato Tourist Information Center and at some shops on the street. For 100 yen, the guidebook will introduce you the names of yokai and their native places. The guide book also serves as the scrapbook for collect each shop’s yokai stamps. If you collect all 37 shops’ stamps, you get the Kanso-sho (a reached-the-goal certification), or the Nonki-seal (a take-it-easy sticker) with 20 stamps. You should not miss other spots like the Minato Sakai Exchange Center, next to JR Sakaiminato Station, with a big wall mural of yokai and the yokai-totem pole. If you mail a letter via the yokai-post, the mail will be stamped with the yokai-character postmark. The train coaches painted in themes of Kitaro and the other yokai characters are in service between Sakaiminato Station and Yonago Station of the JR Sakai line, where even the train announcement are conducted in Kitaro’s voice. The stations of the JR Sakai line have other names connected with yokai. For instance, Sakaiminato Station is also called Kitaro Station.
It takes 45 minutes from Yonago Station to Sakaiminato Station of the JR Sakai line. If you go by plane, Yonago Airport Station is on the JR Sakai line and just takes 25 minutes to Sakaiminato Station, so it is a very convenient location for tourists from distant places.
