Asahiyama zoo is the northernmost zoo in Japan, which is located in Asahikawa city, Hokkaido. Generally zoos in Japan focus on just the exhibition of animals. However, the Asahiyama Zoo focuses on exhibition of the animals’ behavior so that visitors can watch real life behavior of animals. This dramatic style of exhibition made the zoo famous. The zoo is mostly crowded with families, dating couples, and other visitors. More than 1.65 million visitors came to the zoo in the fiscal year of 2013.
Asahiyama Zoo has 21 facilities including: a Seal House, a Polar Bear House, a Penguin House, a Carnivore House, a Giraffe House, a Hippopotamus House, a House of Hokkaido Animals, and other facilities. There is also an exhibition hall of animal-related materials and an Animal Library. As a part of "exhibition of animal behavior," the zoo has facilities such as a cylindrical water tank to show seals’ unique swimming style, an underwater tunnel to exhibit penguins as if they were flying in the sky, and a special cage that allows visitors to observe leopards from right beneath them. You can also view wolves, lesser pandas, monkeys, chimpanzees, eagles, hawks, and other animals in a nearly natural environment. At the zoo you can watch tigers, Yezo shika deer, arctic foxes, etc. running around in snow during winter season. On the other hand, lions, orangutans, capybaras, and other animals that are sensitive to the cold are exhibited outside only for short periods of time. You may want to check the season and time when visiting there. The business hours change depending on the season. The zoo is open from 9:30 AM to 5:15 PM (last admission time 4:00 PM) in the summer, from 10:30 AM to 3:30 PM (last admission time 3:00 PM) in the winter. It is recommended to check their business hours on their website (English and Chinese are available) in advance.
You can visit the Asahiyama Zoo either by car or by public transportation. If you use public transportation, it takes approximately 40 minutes by the Asakikawa Denki-kido bus from JR Asakikawa station, the nearest station to the zoo. If you take a taxi from the nearest station, it will take roughly 30 minutes. The taxi fare to the zoo may be around 3000 yen. If you drive, the zoo’s closest turnoff on the expressway is Asahikawa-kita exit.
