Ride the Kushiro Wetlands Trolley Train
The Kushiro Shitsugen Norokko Train is a sightseeing trolley train that runs between Kushiro Station of the JR Hokkaido Senmohonsen Line, Toro Station and Kawayu Onsen Station. The trail travels along Japan’s largest wetlands, Kushiro Wetlands. Visitors can enjoy the incredible view of the wetlands, Kushiro river, and animals of the wetlands.
Tourist information in announced along the trip and the train even slows down when passing animals and certain sightseeing spots. In order to provide the best view, the train has larger windows than usual and wider floor space as well. In the 3rd car of the train, memorabilia, bento lunches and souvenirs are available. It is a great option if you are looking for souvenirs from Hokkaido.
The Trolley Train makes one roundtrip from Kushiro Station to Toro Station during Japan’s Golden Week (late April/early May) and two round trips per day during the summer. In the fall, the train operates as ‘’Kushiro Wetlands Fall Foliage Trolley Train’’ and makes one roundtrip per day from Kushiro Station to Kawayu Onsen Hot Springs Station. The trolley train only operates from spring through fall. Due to the limited number of trips per day and high demand, advance reservations are highly recommended.
By public transportation to Kushiro Station: Take the JR Nemuro-honsen Line to Kushiro Station.
By car: 5 hour drive west along National Road 38 from ‘’Ikeda IC’’ interchange of the Doto Motorway. There are two paid parking lots near Kushiro Station.
