Tomita Farm is a farmland located in Furano-cho, Hokkaido. Lavender and various colorful flowers are planted on the farm, and they are in their full glory from spring to autumn. There are many facilities on the farmland: display areas for flower arrangements, a gallery exhibiting photos of the flowers of the four seasons on the farm, a museum, a distillery house where lavender essential oil is extracted, gift shops and cafes. Walking around the flower gardens is free throughout the year, from sunrise to sunset. The farmland can become terribly crowded during the times when the flowers are in bloom and during long holidays in Japan. Despite its location in Hokkaido, the area sometimes has unexpectedly high temperatures during the daytime in summer so you should visit the farm in early morning of a weekday to fully enjoy the beautiful landscape. The farm's gift shops and cafes are open approximately from 8:30 a.m. to 17:00 p.m., but the times can change depending on the season.
Tomita Farm is famous for its 'Lavender East,' one of the largest-scale lavender farms in Japan. A tractor called the 'lavender bus' runs through Lavender East and for a fee it will take around for 15 to 20 minutes. On the bus, you can enjoy the landscape of the lavender farm, the Tokachi mountain range and the mountainous region of Yubari, while listening to voice guidance given in four languages: Japanese, English, Chinese and Korean. Please note that Lavender East is only available in July. The flower gardens are divided into several gardens and fields: 'Hanabito field,' 'Sakiwai field,' 'Irodori field,' 'Spring field,' 'Autumn field,' 'Forest field,' 'Green house,' 'Mother's garden,' 'Hanabito garden' and the 'Traditional lavender garden.' You can enjoy a great variety of flowers throughout the seasons. Lavender flowers are at the best in July.
You can go the farm by car or by public transportation. If you go by car, it takes about 45 minutes from Asahikawa Airport on National Highway Route 237, or two and a half hours both from Shinchitose Airport on the Doto Expressway (exit at the Shimkappu Interchange) and from downtown Sapporo on the Doo Expressway (exit at the Mikasa Interchange). On public transportation, the Nakafurano bus stop of the Furano Bus is the closest to the farm. The closest railway station is 'Lavender Field Station' on the JR Furano Line.
