Jozankei Onsen is located in Shikotsu-Toya National Park, which lies to the south of Sapporo City. It is a very famous hot spring where you can also enjoy many activities including golfing, horseback riding, and skiing. Jozankei Onsen is also known for its spectacular show of autumn leaves in the fall.Up to 2,400,000 tourists visit Jozankei Onsen every year. Many foreigners who enjoy sightseeing in Hokkaido also visit the hot spring.
The hot spring in Jozankei is a sodium chloride spring, which is transparent and slightly salty. When visitors bathe in it, the salt will stick to their skin and will prevent their sweat from evaporating.
The origin of Jozankei-Onsen goes back to 1866 when Jozan Mi-izumi, a trainee monk, founded it. The hot spring is named in honour of him for overcoming the many difficulties to establish the basis for a hot spring district.
There is a legend of the Kappa (a legendary animal in Japan) that has been passed along in Jozankei. The hot spring district uses the Kappa as a mascot figure, and there are many sculptures of its image.
The lodging facilities in the hot spring district vary from expensive Japanese-style inns to large hotels, guesthouses, and condominiums, which allow tourists to choose where to stay depending on their budget and the purpose of their visit.
