Hokkaido Kaitaku-no-mura (Hokkaido Cultivation Village)

Hokkaido Cultivation Village is an interactive museum opened in 1983 for the 100th anniversary of Hokkaido’s cultivation. There is an exhibition dedicated to the history of Hokkaido from Meiji Period (1868-1912) to Taisho Period (1912–1926), and Showa Period (1926–1989). You can learn about industry, culture and lifestyle back then. Inside the facility, there is a collection of buildings from all over Hokkaido, divided into four areas: the city area, farm village, mountain village, and fishing village. We can see the efforts and skills of the ancient Hokkaido people who explored the island.

In the village, you can see the old railway stop to Sapporo city, Hokkaido Development Commission Main Building, households, schools, farm village houses, dairy farming houses, and other historical buildings. In summer there are horse drawn carriages railways, in winter, there is a horse drawn sleigh ride. Other events are held as well, such as the farm village experience, traditional toy making, and talk shows. In the Kaitaku-no-mura Restaurant, original cuisine is served. For example, "Tondei-hei teishoku" (‘teishoku’ means a set meal), and "Imo-mochi" (Potato cake) famous in that area, Nishin-soba, and Jingisukan (mutton), all of which are local specialties of Hokkaido.

There is a free volunteering tour in this village in English, and if visitors want the guide in English, they need to apply a week in advance.
