Moiwa-yama Observatory, located around the center of Sapporo, offers a fantastic view from 531m up. From the summit you can see Sapporo’s rooftops and the Sea of Japan’s Ishikari Bay, as well as enjoy the large panorama of mountains off in the distance. You can come any time of year to see the nighttime Sapporo scenery of a fantastic snowscape spreading out, so it’s become a very popular date spot. You can use the ropeway up from the bottom to the midway point, and then from the midway point to the summit you can take a very unique “Morris Car” cable car.
It's very popular among locals for hiking trails and there are numerous trails in place (shortest course is 2.4km, longest 4.5km) and during the summer weekends the trails are full of hikers. In 2011 the facilities including the observatory and ropeway were renewed, and the lifts to the buildings were also improved. No matter who you are, if you come to enjoy this place, you'll feel reborn.
There's another observatory on the summit, as well as a restaurant and a hall, and the viewing restaurant "THE JEWELS", where you can enjoy a lovely dinner while watching Sapporo at night, as if jewels were sparkling just under your eyes.
On the subway, you can get off the Tozai Line's Odori Station (大通駅) and take a streetcar (tram) to get off at the ropeway. There is a free shuttle bus from the tram stop and from Moiwa Station (もいわ山麓駅) you travel by ropeway and cable car. From JR Sapporo Station by ropeway it's about 30 minutes. Additionally, there are convenient tourist buses that run around the main tourist areas in Sapporo City.
