What is Hokkaido University Botanical Gardens

Hokkaido University Botanical Garden is a botanical garden operated by a national university, Hokkaido University. It is located a 10 minute walk from Sapporo Station. It is behind the old red brick tourist attraction “Former Hokkaido Government Office Building”. It opened at the end of the 19th century and is the 2nd oldest botanical garden in Japan.

There are approximately 4000 types of plants on the more than 13ha area site. There are 10 areas in the Gardens and are separated by theme such as, Lilac deciduous trees which are a symbol of Hokkaido, roses, and even an area for alpine plants. Most of the plants are those that grow naturally in Hokkaido, but due to the cooperation from Canada’s University of British Columbia Botanical Gardens, some plants are even from the North American continent.

The Gardens also houses the oldest museum in Hokkaido, and a reference room with exhibits and documents of the Ainu and Uilta, indigenous people of Hokkaido. If you are lucky, you may even see squirrels and birds.

Located just a 10 minute walk from Sapporo’s busiest shopping district, quiet air fills the Botanical Gardens and the mind is sure to find calm here.
