What is the Uzushio Cruise?
With the Uzushio Cruise, you can see the whirlpools formed in the Naruto Straits from the tide-watching ship named Kanrinmaru. The whirlpools of the Naruto Straits are formed by the strong tides of the Pacific Ocean and the Seto Inland Sea. The whirlpools form on the Awaji Island side at high tide, and on the Naruto side at low tide. The normal intensity of the tide is 13 to 15 kilometers per hour, which sometimes reaches 20 kilometers per hour at flood tide. This is the fastest tide in Japan and is sometimes described as one of the three fastest tides in the world. The size of the whirlpool is also world class, up to 30 meters in diameter. You can observe the whirlpool in close-up from the Kanrinmaru boat. The Kanrinmaru is a replica of the original Kanrinmaru, the first screw-driven steam warship in Japan. The Kanrinmaru carried the first official Japanese envoy, Katsu Kaishu, to the US in 1860. The ship departs from the port six times a day. As the whirlpools are formed by the tide, so you should check the whirlpool schedule on the website below (available only in Japanese) before making a visit to the port.
You can get to the Fukura port where the ship departs by bus or car. If you go by the expressway bus, get off at the Fukura bus terminal stop. From there, it takes two minutes on foot to the Fukura port. If you go by car, use the Nishiawamihara Interchange of the Kobe Awaji Naruto Expressway. There is a free parking area near the port.
