Himeji Castle, the famous castle of Japan
The Himeji Castle is registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site andit continues to gaining popularity because of its graceful form. The Himeji Castle was constructed in the Azuchi-Momoyama period (1574-1600) and its present form was finished in the Edo period (1603-1868). Although nearly 400 years have passed since its construction, the donjon and turret of the castle remains, so you can see and feel the composition of Japanese castle from a close up. The white plaster is used at joints of castle walls and roof tile, the castle looks white, which makes it called Shirasagi-jo, the castle of white heron. The Himeji Castle has been under reconstruction on its donjon is expected to be open to the public from March 27, 2015.

The site of the castle has many steep slopes and stairs. The inside the castle is poorly lit and you will need change your shoes to slippers. Watch your step while looking around the castle. It is also recommended to keep your head down while you are inside the castle as the ceiling is quite low. In spring, the castle attracts many visitors because of all the cherry trees planted around the castle are in bloom. Besides the season of cherry flowers, the castle is set off by fresh green in spring and colors of autumn leaves so you can always enjoy just looking the outside of the castle. On holidays, the volunteer guides, wearing costumes of feudal lords, their vassals and ninja, will be at the site and guide you. The Tourist Loop Bus is run around the sightseeing spots nearby the castle. The fare of the bus is 170 yen per adult, 90 yen for an elementary school student.
You can get to the Himeji Castle by car and by train. The closest railway station is Himeji Station of the Sanyo Electric Railway and the Tokaido Main Line of JR West. The Shinkansen (Bullet Train) stops at JR Himeji Station, making the castle convenient for visitors from distant places. It takes 15 minute walk from the station to the castle. If you go by car, the nearest interchanges are Sanyo-Himeji-Higashi or Sanyo-Himeji-Nishi of the Sanyo Expressway. There is no free parking area around the castle, but privately operated pay parking lots are available.
