Tenju-an where you can enjoy two different Japanese gardens
Tenju-an is a subtemple of Nanzen-ji located in Sakyo-ku, Kyoto. It was originally constructed in 1339 but after it fell into decay it was revived in 1602. Tenju-an is most famous as an attraction to see Kyoto's autumn leaves, and Nanzen-ji itself is a monument to autumn leaves. This is due to the numerous autumn leaves viewing spots located around it, and if you visit Kyoto in autumn it's definitely a place to drop by and visit. On the premises are the two Japanese gardens, the Hojo Front Garden and the Shoin South Garden. The Hojo garden is a dry landscape garden that uses stones and sand in the form of a flowing river, and the Shoin garden is a strolling garden with a variety of paths around a pond. They are two distinctly different gardens and you can enjoy both of them at Tenju-an. At the time of autumn leaves, the leaves contrast beautifully with the sand in the Hojo garden and the water in the Shoin garden. In addition, during the fall season there are evening light ups from 17:30~21:00. The light ups create a different and charming atmosphere compared to day viewing of the leaves. Additionally, there are different routes for appreciating Tenju-an during the day and the night. During the night you can enter the main temple that is normally closed off during the day. Please be aware that during night admission, the admission fee is 100 yen higher than the normal fee. During winter, the operating hours are shortened by 30 minutes.
Take the Kyoto Municipal Subway Tozai Line to Keage Station (蹴上駅) and walk 10 minutes. The walk from Keage Station to Tenju-an is very full of Kyoto atmosphere and sights, and so it is recommended you take the subway to the station and then walk to Tenju-an. By car, take the Meishin Highway to Kyoto Higashi IC (京都東). Parking fee of 1000 yen for the first 2 hours, and then 500 for every hour after that.
