Gold leaf on ‘’Kinkaku’’

Kinkaku was built in the Hogyo-style with a pyramidal roof.  The three-storied building was destroyed by fire in 1950 and the building now was rebuilt in 1955.  Of the three floors, the first floor Heian era palatial architecture, the second floor is Butsuma-style of samurai-style, the third is of Buddhist sanctum style.  Gold leaf is used on the second and third floors.  It is best to take photographs from south of the pond.  The best time for photographs is past lunch when the sun is in the south.

On the temple grounds is the Sekkatei tea ceremony room of tea ceremony master Kanamori Sokazu.  It was built to greet Emperor Gomizunoo and was name so because the sunset on the Kinkaku building was so beautiful.  The circular and triangular windows are recognizable.  The bush clover and Nandina domestica of the alcove post is renowned.
