About the Okochi Sanso Villa

The Okochi Sanso Villa was the house that belonged to the famous 20th century period drama actor Dejiro Okochi(1898~1962). Okochi was enchanted by the beautiful scenery that you can see from Kokura-san, and assisted in hand-selecting the materials for the house all the way from the planning to the final construction over a period of 30 years. The house has been designated as national cultural heritage.

The Kaiyushiki Shakkei Teien garden has many cherries and maples so spring and fall are highly recommended visiting times. From the garden you can see Arashiyama’s Hozugawa River as well as Mt. Hiei, and you can see so far that you can even see the streets of Kyoto. The Michelin Green Guide selected the "view from the Okochi Sanso" as a one star attraction. The entrance fee includes green tea and sweets it’s highly recommended you tour the garden at a leisurely pace. Inside the garden is the Denjiro Okochi memorial as well as a life-sized photograph of his representative work "Tange Sazen", plus there are a variety of relics, videos, photographs and more on display.
