What is Kyoto National Museum?
The Kyoto National Museum is one of Japan's 4 National Museums. The museum displays pieces representing the cultural heritage of Kyoto, the capital of a thousand years, focusing especially on the Heian period (794-1185) to the Edo period (1603-1868). The museum not only holds the exhibition, but is also a facility for preservation and research. The museum opened in 1897 as the Teikoku Kyoto Hakubutsukan (Imperial Kyoto Museum) and the original brick building has been designated as one of the nationally important cultural properties.
The permanent collection called Heiseichishinkan was renovated in September of 2014. Out of the 6000 pieces of the National Museum and 6000 additional pieces entrusted to them (total 12,000 pieces), 4000 pieces are exhibited. The exhibition includes sculptures, calligraphy, textiles, lacquerware, picture scrolls, and paintings. It is possible to enjoy Japanese culture on a grand scale. The exhibition changes every 4 to 6 weeks so it is possible to enjoy pieces on every visit.
In addition to the main building, there is also the Meiji-kotokan Building, a tea house, and the west garden featuring a water fountain with a statue of Rodin's "The Thinker", and an outdoor exhibition of Japanese stone Buddhas. The east garden features an outdoor exhibition of Korean stone relics. Visitors can enjoy a nice stroll and enjoy the 3 different areas of the museum. Please note, last entry into the museum is 30 minutes prior to closing.
From JR Kyoto Station, take the city bus to the "Hakbutsukan/Sanjyusan Gendo-mae" stop. The bus will stop outside of the museum. 7 minute walk from the Shichijyou Station on the Keihan Railway.
