About Maruyama Park
Kyoto’s oldest park, opened in 1886. You can stroll around a Japanese garden and enjoy a restaurant and a teahouse. It’s right near the eastern side of Yasaka Shrine so you can drop by and enjoy a quick visit and enjoy the Japanese gardens.
Spring cherry blossoms and autumn leaves are the prime attractions here. There are 800 cherry trees in the garden here and their simultaneous bloom is a masterpiece. The flowing weeping cherries "Gion Weeping Cherry" are especially superb and are not to be missed.
Enjoy Japanese Hanami
In Kyoto there are countless spots where you can enjoy cherry blossoms around temples and shrines. Out of all these if you’d like a discerning and tasteful spot, you can enjoy chatting while eating dumplings and tea here in the teahouse in such places as Maruyama Park, and with a blue sheet under the cherry blossoms you can sit under them and admire the cherry trees overhead.
In Japan, there are often celebrations held around March to April to welcome new employees to work or school and send off departing employees, and so many times venues for cherry blossom viewing are used here. There are also "bureikos" where superiors and subordinates cast aside their ranks and enjoy merrymaking and alcohol, and these are also often held while gazing at the beautiful cherry blossoms, a quintessential of Japanese culture.
Incidentally, near the teahouse in the park there’s also a shop that sells roasted meat for outdoor eating. Enjoying the delicious roasted beef and barbeque while watching the cherries is a unique experience.
Take the Kyoto city bus route to Gion (祇園) stop and it’s a 5 minute walk. By the Keihan Electric Railway’s Gion Station it’s a 13 minute walk and a 10 minute walk from the Hankyu Kawaramachi Station (河原町駅)
