When you arrive in Kyoto at the Shinkansen station and exit out the northern Karasuma Central Exit, immediately an impressive tower unlike most others will come into view. This tower is not new as it was opened in 1964, however it leaves a strong impression you won’t soon forget, and what’s more it also emits striking colours. Despite its avant garde looks, its taste is definitely very “Kyoto” and it fits right in.
The building's appearance is that of a lighthouse, and due to Kyoto's height regulations on high rise buildings it's often said to have the image of illuminating Kyoto city. If you include the Kyoto Tower building that acts as the pedestal, it's the highest in Kyoto city at 131m, the observatory is at the 100m mark where you can enjoy the sights on a pleasant day, and maybe even see distant Osaka. Inside the building is a hotel and a restaurant, plenty of souvenir shops, and it is always bustling with tourists. On top of that in the basement of the building is the public bath "YUU" which was opened in 2012, and is open from 7:00~20:30, so you can take a relaxing bath to rest your body in the middle of a stroll. The tower is definitely going to be the landmark that catches your eye when you come to Kyoto. It's great to start your journey in Kyoto with a panoramic view, or if you want to stop by at the end for some shopping. Enjoy it at your leisure.
Train: From the JR Kyoto Station go straight out of Karasuma Central Exit and cross over to Shiokoji-cho.
