About Hosen-in Temple

Hosen-in Temple was founded in 1012 as one of subtemples of the Tendai-sect Shorin-in Temple located to the north of Sanzenin in Ohara, Kyoto. Hosen-in is famous for its two gardens. One is Bankan-en, also known as the "picture frame garden". Bamboos and the countryside of Ohara in the background can be seen between pillars from the room, as if the garden looked like a picture in a frame. The other is Tsurukame Teien, which was constructed in the mid-Edo period. The garden is designed so as to visualize a pond as a crane, a mound as a turtle, and an old sasanqua as Mt. Horai, which can be viewed from the interior through a lattice window. A 300 year-old sal tree (Shorea robusta) is growing thick in this garden. Another high spot is "Chi-tenjo (bloody ceiling)", which was moved from Fushimi Castle, the same one as in Genko-an temple, Takagamine. In the Sengoku period, the loyal vassals of the Tokugawas including Torii Mototada committed suicide by the sword in Fushimi Castle when defeated by troops led by Ishida Mitsunari. The floor boards of the castle soaked with their bloods were set up as the ceiling to console their souls. The ceiling gives a vivid description of the battle. A 700 year-old Japanese white pine "Goyo-matsu" (Pinus parviflora) in the shape of Mt. Omi Fuji is also popular.
