What is Atago-jinja Shrine

Atago-jinja Shrine is know as the shrine with divine favor in fire protection, and it is also the headquarters of approximately 900 Atago-jinja Shrines nationwide.  On Atago-jinja Shrine’s Hibusefuda (Amulet believed to have spiritual power to prevent fires), the words Hinoyojin (Before of fires) is written, and it is found in affixed in the kitchens of not only homes and stores in Kyoto, but also many others in all of Kansai (Southern-central, also known as Western Japan).  Also, it is believed that if a person worships at Atago-jinja Shrine before the age of three, the person will live their entire life unaffected by fire.  This is called "Atago-no-mittsu Mairi"

At an elevation of 924m, the Shrine is located at the summit of Atago-yama (Atago Mountain) in Northwest Kyoto and it is necessary to have attire appropriate for climbing in order to hike up to it.  From the middle of the mountain trail on the way to the Shrine, it is possible to view the Hozu-gawa (Hozu River) and enjoy Kyoto city’s view from above and forget about the arduous trek.  Every year from the evening of July 31 to the dawn of August 1, Sennichi Mairi (Thousand Days Worship) is held.  It is believed that if a person worships at the Shrine during this time, they will have 1000 days of divine favor in fire prevention.  Tens of thousands of visitors make the pilgrimage during this time every year.
