What is Katsura Imperial Villa

Located in the western suburbs of Kyoto along the western bank of the Katsura River, Katsura Imperial Villa are facilities related to the imperial family.  In 1615, Hachijyonomiya Toshihitoshino of the royal family began building the villa and the project was completed 47 years later.  With an area of 70,000 square meters, the villa has at its center, a pond,  and also has Shoin (Study/book conservatory) and Chatei (Rest houses). The integration of the garden and buildings represents the ultimate in Japanese-style beauty and attracts many visitors.  It is praised as a masterpiece of Japanese Gardens.

Surrounding the pond are the Koshoin Study, Nakashoin Study, Shingoten Study, and Chatei rest houses.  The Chatei are four buildings named, Shoukintei, Shoukatei, Shouiken, Kepparou.  Visitors can also enjoy a boat ride in the pond.

Access

20 minute walk from the Katsura Station on the Hankyu Railway Kyoto Line.  8 minute walk from the Katsura Rikyu stop on the Kyoto bus.
