What is the Kyoto International Manga Museum?
Japan’s pride, manga culture has spread worldwide. The artistic and literary value, design, content and various other aspects are recognized worldwide and have attracted a lot of attention. The Kyoto International Manga Museum goes beyond the realm of entertainment and is a major facility that seriously studies cartoon as a culture.
The Kyoto International Manga Museum is located in central Kyoto in Karasuma Oike, in an old school that has been converted to a museum. It opened in 2006 and is new, but history can be felt in the stately and impressive building.
The collection is approximately 30 million books, including overseas works, but many of them are not exhibited due to archival purposes. Approximately 50,000 books can be freely browsed.
The exhibition area is replaced each season and various themes, works, and historical masterpieces can be appreciated. There is also a hands-on cartoon creation experience area as well as a café. Be sure to plan enough time at this museum as visitors tend to stay a long time.
Japanese manga has garnered attention overseas and the Japanese word "Manga" has become a commonly accepted term worldwide. In the Manga Expo area, over 5600 books are available for reading including Japanese manga translated to English as well as overseas works. With 10% of visitors being tourists, it is not an exaggeration to say that manga culture has spread worldwide.
2 minute walk from the Karasuma Oike Station on the Subway Karasuma Line or Tozai Line. It is located along a major street that has convenient public transportation. Many bus routes also pass through this area.
