The History of Shinshu Hoonbyo Temple (Higashi Hongan-ji)
Shinshu Honbyo Temple was founded in 1602, the current land having been given to Kyonyo, the 12th generation head priest of Hongan-ji Temple, by warrior and statesman, Tokugawa Ieyasu. It was founded as a faction of Hongan-ji Temple of Horikawa-dori Street, and was named Higashi Hongan-ji Temple (East Hongan-ji Temple). There is conjecture that it was built with the political aim to divide the influence of the large religious community. Though the founder of the Jodo-shin sect is Shinranshonin, Kyonyoshonin is regarded as the founder of Higashi Hongan-ji Temple.
It is also the head temple of the Jyodo-shinshu Otani-ha sect and the formal name is Shinshu Honbyo Temple. It was devastated by fire and rebuilt many times in its history. The current structures were rebuilt in 1895.
Goeido Hall at Higashi Hongan-ji Temple is the world's largest wooden building. Also, there are many other historic buildings such as the Amidado Hall, as well as national treasures such as Shinran Yukari, however, those are off limits to the public. The Shoseien Garden was created in 1641 and features seasonal flowers planted a central pond as well as several tea houses. The variegated landscape is also known as Jyusankei. There are many traditional Japanese gardens in Kyoto, however, Shoseien Garden is regarded as one of the best among them.
Please note that the temple is open from 5:50AM to 5:30PM but the Shoseien Garden closes at 4:30PM. The entry fee for Shoseien Garden is 500 yen for adults and 250 yen for high school and under.
