The Hogon-In Temple is a child temple of the Rinzai Tenryu-Ji temple. It was founded in 1461, and was later damaged in the fires of the Onin war, but was later reconstructed by Hideyoshi Toyotomi. In 2002 it was moved to its present location, and in 2008 the main temple was reconstructed. The principle idol is a Buddha with eleven faces, and housed here is a famous garden called "the garden of the lion’s roar". The garden is primarily open during spring from March to June, and during autumn from October to December there is special admission only.
The Shishiku Garden
The Shishiku Garden ("the garden of the lion’s roar") is a garden that has been famous ever since antiquity, having been published in Edo-era guide books. The "lion’s roar" is a reference to Buddhist teachings. The garden skillfully incorporates the beauty of Arashiyama in a must see "Shishiiwa" where a large amount of boulders have been piled up. During spring and the autumn special admission period many people come to visit, and you can enjoy the trees at night
Also during the special admission period you can view Noriko Tamura’s sliding door picture "Fuga Sansan Sansan Jizai". It is located in the main hall and is a picture spread out over several sliding doors and depicts the incarnations of Kannon in 33 different bodies, ranging from young to old in age.
Take the JR Sagano Line to Saga Arashiyama Station (嵯峨嵐山駅), get off and walk 15 minutes. Or take the Keifuku line to Arashiyama Station and it’s a 5 minute walk. You can enter the temple during spring or during special admission times in fall. The special admission times in fall are from 17:30 to 20:30, and you can enter up to 15 minutes before closing. The event Kyoto Arashiyama Flower and Light Road has special admission during the night. Admission is 500 yen during the day and nighttime admission is 600 yen. The sliding door picture is paid separately, for 500 yen.
