What is Gion Kaburenjo Theater

In the spring, the Maiko or Geisha of Kyoto’s Gion area put on dance performances. The major stage where these performances take place is the Gion Kaburenjo Theater. The performances are held every April 1 through April 30 and represent the spring tradition and beautiful atmosphere of Gion.

The theater was originally Seijyuin Temple, the sub-temple of Kennin-ji Temple, but was modified in 1873 to become a training facility for song and dance. It was moved to its current location in 1912. With the exception of 3 years starting in 1950 when it was closed due to repair, the Miyako Odori dance performances have been performed here.

Miyako Odori is made up of 8 acts. It expresses the four seasons from around the country through traditional singing, chanting and dance. As well, there are dances that are themed after kabuki and Japanese literature. The audience is drawn in from the very first scene where 20 Maiko dancers dressed in light blue kimono line the stage. Audiences can enjoy the Gion Hanamachi charm and artistic skill watching the debut of Maiko dancers to veteran Kyoto Geisha dancers.

The admission tickets are 2500 yen for general admission seating, 4200 yen for reserved seats. There are also 4800 yen mezzanine seats which include tea. The mezzanine-tea ticket option includes a viewing of a tea ceremony by a Geisha in a tearoom before the actual dance performance. This tearoom was created to accommodate foreign visitors who are not used to sitting on the floor. The plate on which the tea confectionary is served can also be taken home as a souvenir. There is also a gift shop which sells original items such as purses and wallets made from kimono fabric worn by Maiko dancers.
