See beautiful memorabilia of Toyotomi Hideyoshi
Toyokuni-jinja is a shrine that is dedicated to one of Japan’s 3 great heroes, Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The other two heroes are Oda Nobunaga and Tokugawa Ieyasu. There are similar shrines in both Osaka, Aichi, and Shiga Prefectures, but this is the one in Kyoto.
Toyokuni-jinja was destroyed following the opening of the Tokugawa Shogunate, but was reconstructed in 1868 under instructions of the new shogunate.
At Toyokuni there is a large Chinese-style entrance gate (Karamon). Alongside Daitoku-ji and Nishihongan-ji it is said to be one of the big 3 Chinese gates in Japan. It is said to be remains of Fushimi Castle, and was a personal favorite of Toyotomi Hideyoshi himself. Some of the gold leaf that was used to ornament it originally is still present.
There is a treasure hall you can enter for a 300 yen fee where numerous treasures are housed including the bow and sword used by Hideyoshi, and a beautiful gold and black chest that housed Hideyoshi’s personal belongings and daily necessities, a 2.5m tall "Tetsu-douro", an iron garden lamp, and many other items. It is an essential location for people who are interested in Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
From the Keihan line’s Shichijo Station (七条駅) it is just 10 minutes on foot. You can also take a Kyoto Bus to the Museum-Sanjusangen-do stop (博物館三十三間堂前) and it’s just 5 minutes from the stop. By car, there is free parking.
