The Osaka Mint allows people to enter the grounds of its compound in mid-April every year when it becomes one of the most popular cherry blossom viewing locations in Japan. The "passage" started in 1883 so it has a more than 100-year history. Cherry blossoms bloom on about 400 trees along the 560-meter passage that has as many as 130 different kinds of cherry trees. The majority of the trees are yae-zakura that bloom later than other kinds of cherry trees. The passage is open from 10:00 to 21:00 on weekdays and from 9:00 to 21:00 on weekends. Trees are lit up with paper lanterns and other forms of illumination after sunset so you can enjoy beautiful yozakura (cherry blossoms in evening).
Viewing period and Advice
As people can walk into the Mint’s grounds for only a week every year, more than one million people visit during this period. The weekends become especially busy, so it is better to go there on weekdays. The one week open period differs from year to year depending on the blooming status of cherry blossoms. There will be an announcement on the period in the middle of March so please check the official website to check on the exact date the Mint’s grounds will be open. This passage is not a place for a viewing party, which is often seen at many other cherry blossoms sites in Japan. Besides drinking and dining are prohibited on the grounds, there are other rules such as no smoking, walking in one direction only, and it is also prohibited to hold a spot to view from. You may feel a little uncomfortable with all these rules, but there is a certain elegance to just purely enjoying the view of the cherry blossoms.
There are many stations located near the Osaka Mint. There is no parking available nearby, so use public transportation to visit. The closest stations are Tenma-bashi of the Tanimachi subway line or Keihan Honsen line, or Osaka Tenmangu or Osaka Kitazume on the JR Tozai line. You will need to walk for 15 minutes from any of those stations.
