Shinsekai is a downtown area located in Ebisu Higashi in Osaka. With sightseeing locations such as Tsutenkaku in the center and JanJan Yokocho (alley) in the south, streets with restaurants have a retro atmosphere and make you feel reminiscent of the Showa era (1926–1989). There are also many theaters that serve as a reminder of Luna Park, which used to be in the area. Some are converted to pachinko parlors or kushikatsu restaurants, but many are still used as theaters.
Enjoying the busy area
There are many different restaurants in Shinsekai, such as takoyaki, okonomiyaki, kushikatsu (fried pork on skewers), sushi, yakiniku (Korean barbeque), coffee shops, izakaya (Japanese bars), etc. Additionally, you will find pachinko parlors and many movie theaters for adults, so basically it is a town for adults. Also, Shinsekai is the third largest gay district in Japan and there are 32 gay-related shops including 25 gay bars as of 2013. You can enjoy Tsutenkaku, Janjan Yokocho and Tennoji Zoo in the daytime and the adult town in the nighttime.
Streets of Shinsekai are very complicated and busy with people, so you better use public transportation to get there. Closest stops are Ebisu-cho station on the Osaka City Subway Sakai Line or the Hankai Railway, Imamiya station on the JR Kanjo Line, or Dobutsuen-mae station on the Osaka City Subway’s Midosuji Line.
