Ohatsu-Tenjin Shrine (Tsuyuten-jinja Shrine)

Ohatsu-Tenjin Shrine is the popular name for the Tsuyuten-jinja Shrine, located in Sonezaki, Osaka. This shrine has 1300 year history since its establishment in around 700 AD. The visiting times are from 6:00 am to 24:00 pm every day. Ohatsu, a prostitute at Tenmaya in Dojima Sinchi, and Tokube, a salesclerk at Hiranoya in Uchimoto-ho committed suicide together at Tsuyuten-Jinja in 1703. This tragic love story was written as a Japanese bunraku puppet play called "Sonezaki Shinju" by Chikamatsu Monzaemon (playwright, 1653-1724). Since then, this shrine has been famous as the stage for the story and its popular name "Ohatsu-Tenjin" taking after the heroins' names and as a matchmaking shrine.

Grounds of the Shrine

The main building of the shrine was rebuilt after it was burnt down during WWII. Besides a subordinate shrine, there are other buildings like Shingyu-sha, the God's worshiped Cow sheds, called "Kamiushi-san" and "Nadeushi-san". People have believed for a long time that if you stroke an afflicted part of your body and the same part of the cow deity in turn, the cow deity will accept your affliction for you, or the spiritual power of Shingyu-sha itself will heal you. Therefore, many people still visit here. Also, Ohatsu-Tenjin holds many events such as the Hatsu-mairi (first shrine visit of the year) on January 1st, Setsubun-Sai (beginning of a year) on February 3rd, flea market on 1st Friday every month, and the Reitai-sai, summer festival on the 3rd Friday and Saturday of July, which attract many visitors.
