What is the Tenma-tenjin Hanjo-tei Theater?

The Tenma-tenjin Hanjo-tei Theater is a yose theatre dedicated to rakugo-traditional comic storytelling performed solo. Besides kamigata-rakugo, which is typically performed in Kyoto and Osaka, you can enjoy manzai, stand-up comedies and magician's shows. Three performances, asaseki, hiruseki, and yoruseki are held in the morning, afternoon, and at night respectively. The main performance is hiruseki performed in the afternoon where the performer changes every week. In the opening of yose, you can see an up-and-coming young performer beating a drum, the ichiban-daiko that announces the opening of the theater. In the evening yoruseki, a unique form of entertainment is performed by an association-sponsored rakugo-ka, a comic storyteller of rakugo. Asaseki, the morning performances are sometimes reserved for customers visiting as a group. On the weekend, many young performers appear on the stage. If you want to enjoy yose, you need to buy tickets that are on sale two months prior to the performance. Day tickets are also available. The theater program is announced on the website of Tenma-tenjin Hanjo-tei Theater.
