Shitenno-ji Temple

Shitenno-ji Temple located in Tenno-ji ward in Osaka, is one of the seven main temples constructed by Prince Shotoku. According to "The Chronicles of Japan," compiled in the Nara period, the temple was constructed in 593AD, having more than 1400 years’ history. Most buildings standing the precincts of the temple collapsed due to fires and wars, but have been carefully restored to reflect the original design. The opening hours of Mido, Chushin-Garan and the gardens is 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from April to September, and from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. from October to March. Rokkakudo is open from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The gates of Shitenno-ji Temple are always open so you can go to visit or worship from the outside of Mido.

The precincts of Shitenno-ji Temple

The southern end of Shitenno-ji Temple is Minamidaimon, the Eastern end is Higashidaimon. Ishitorii, the gate designated as an important cultural asset, stands at the western end of the temple. After passing through Ishitorii, you will reach Gokurakumon, known as paradise gate. Originally, the main gate is Minamidaimon, but many worshippers visit through Gokurakumon as it is considered as leading into paradise. Chushin-Garan, the main building of Shitenno-ji Temple, stands at the center-south of the precincts. On the north side of the Chushin-garan, just the center of the precincts are occupied by Rokujiraisando, an important cultural asset, and Shoryoin (Taishiden), where Prince Shotoku is enshrined, is situated on the side of east of Chushin-garan. There are many other buildings including Mido, Ishibutai, as well as a cemetery, gardens, Homotsukan, the treasure house, and so on. The precincts are spacious and really worth seeing for visitors interested in old buildings and temples of Japan.


You can visit Shitenno-ji Temple by train. The closest stations are: Tennoji Station on the JR Kanjo-sen line, Tennoji Station or Shitenno-ji mae yuhigaoka Station of the Osaka Municipal Railway, and Abenobashi Station on the Minamiosaka line of the Kinkinihontetsudo. There are paid parking lots available next to the Minamidaimon gate of Shitenno-ji temple if you go by car. The parking charge is 200 yen per 30 minutes from 8:00 10:00 p.m., and 100 yen per hour from 10 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. to the next morning.
