What is the Tenjinbashi-suji Shopping Street?
The Tenjinbashi-suji Shopping Street located in Kita-ward, Osaka City is the longest arcaded shopping street in Japan. The shopping street is divided into six areas, having Osaka-like restaurants, old specialty shops, clothing stores and other commercial shops. Just strolling around the street is a pleasurable experience. The opening hours vary depending on the shops. As the shopping street is thronged with people on weekends and holidays, it is recommended to visit there on weekdays. People in Osaka tend to walk at a faster pace, so please take care not to be jostled in the crowd on the busy street.
A variety of events, bargain sales and festivals are held on the shopping street every month. Among of them, Tenjinmatsuri-Josei-Omikoshi held in summer is typically famous for its "Gal-Mikoshi" a portable shrine is carried by women. The Gal-Mikoshi parade is part of a series of events named the Ohaguruma-ko of Osaka Tenmangu Shrine. Every year auditions are advertised and held to select the best women to carry the portable shrine.
Tenjinbashi-suji Shopping Street does not have any parking lots and it is recommended to get to there by public transportation. The street stretches far from north to south, so there are several railway stations close to the street: Tenjinbashi-suji Rokucho-me on both the Osaka Municipal Subway and on the Hankyu Railway, Tenman Station on the Osaka Loop line of the JR West, Ogimachi Station and Minamimorimachi Station of the Osaka Municipal Subway, Osaka Tenman Station on the Tozai line of the JR West.
