Machiya Historical Hall, Yamaguchi-ke Old Residence

Machiya Historical Hall, Yamaguchi-ke Old Residence is a townhouse located in Osaka, which was built in the beginning of the Edo Period (1603-1868). It is designated as one of Japan's Important Cultural Assets and is now open to public.

Yamaguchi-ke Old Residence

The master's house of the Yamaguchi-ke Old Residence was built right after the Osaka Natsu-no Jin (name of a battle in 1615), when the town was burnt down. It is one of the few buildings remaining from the early Edo Period. Inside the building there is a spacious earthen floor that has a wagoya made with pillars of beams and bundles. Across the earthen floor there are three tatami rooms (Japanese style rooms). The second floor is above the tatami rooms. The West Storehouse (built in 1775) and the North Storehouse (built in 1800) are on the property as well. There is also a garden with a large wax tree which is said to be over 200 years old. Besides the buildings, you can see exhibitions of Sakai City's traditional industries (cutlery, incense sticks, bleached cotton, and cotton rugs) or exhibitions of decorations used in yearly events such as the Girls Festival, Children's Day, and Tanabata.
