What is Yasukuni-jinja Shrine?
Yasukuni-jinja Shrine is located in Chiyoda-ku in Tokyo. It is a shrine which honors and ensures the posterity of deeds of those who gave their lives for the nation and enshrines their spirits. Over 2,466,000 lives that were lost during various wars and events including the Meiji Restoration, Boshin War, Russo-Japanese War, Manchurian Incident, Greater East Asia War, and Pacific War.
There is a military museum on site, exhibiting relics and artifacts from the military and various battles. This military museum, Yushukan, is the first and oldest military museum in Japan.
Yasukuni-jinja Shrine is also known for its cherry blossoms. Over 600 cherry blossom trees have been planted at Yasukuni-jinja including Kanzakura, Fujizakura, and weeping cherry trees. The shrine is crowded with visitors during cherry blossom season.
The Chiyoda-no Sakuramatsuri (Chiyoda Cherry Blossom Festival) occurs every year during full bloom and the shrine lined with food and festival stalls and flooded with visitors.
~The Mitama Festival which began in 1947 brings over 300,000 visitors to the shrine and is a summer tradition in Tokyo. Over 30,000 lanterns illuminate the shrine grounds and festivities featuring mikoshi (portable shrines), Aomori nebuta (figure striking kabuki poses), and various entertainment take place. The shrine is bustling even at night with food stalls and many visitors.
By public transportation: 10 minute walk from Ichigaya Station on the JR East Japan Chuo Line, Sobu Line or Toei Shinjuku Line trains.
By car : 10 minute drive from the ‘’Kasuigaseki IC’’ interchange on the Shuto Highway Metropolitan loop. There is a paid parking lot on site.
