What is Suehirotei?

Suehirotei is a theater in Shinjuku ward. You can enjoy performances such as rakugo, paper cutting, manzai comic dialogue, acrobatics etc. Because you can enjoy authentic rakugo for a relatively low price, it is a theater popular with young people.

About the performance schedule

Those performed on a regular schedule on a daily basis are called joseki, and performances and performers are changed three times per month. The performances at the beginning of the month are called kamiseki, the ones in the middle of the month are called nakaseki and the ones at the end are called shimoseki. There are both afternoon and evening shows and the afternoon show runs from 12:00 to 16:30 and the evening show is from 17:00 to 21:00.

Besides the joseki, every Saturday there is the shinya yose late night performance from 21:30 to 23:00 and there is the hatsu seki on New Year’s.

Generally, reservations are unnecessary but please be prepared to stand if seats sell out. You can check for details and prices on the web site (Japanese only).

Access

The nearest station is Shinjuku San-chome Station on the Tokyo Metro Marunouchi line and Fukutoshin line and the Toei Shinjuku line. It is directly outside exits E4 and E3. It is a 15 minute walk from JR Shinjuku Station.
