Yose Hall with balcony seats
Asakusa Entertainment Hall is one of "Rakugo Joseki" theaters in Tokyo, along with Suzumoto Engeijo in Ueno, Suehirotei in Shinjuku, and Engeijo in Ikebukuro, located in the so-called Koen Rokku entertainment district in Taito-ku, Tokyo. "Rakugo Joseki" is a theater hosting rakugo (classical comedy) acts on a regular basis open throughout the year, which is also called "Yose". It was newly opened in 1964, on fourth and fifth floors built as extensions to the Toyo Gekijo theater. The Rakugo Kyokai association and the Rakugo Geijutsu Kyokai association perform rakugo acts, alternately every 10 days. The performance calendar is available on the website. The main hall is on the first floor, with all chair seats. Unusually for a Rakugo Joseki hall, there are balcony seats with a seating capacity of 340. All are for free seating. Asakusa Toyokan on the fourth floor is a hall for a variety of performances other than rakugo, such as manzai (comic backchat), mandan (comic monologue), konto (short comic play), magic show, silhouette cutting, acrobatics and mimicry. Formerly known as the Asakusa Fransu-za, Asakusa Toyokan is famous for having produced many talented actors and comedians who used to perform in the theater before they reached stardom, including Beat Takeshi (the stage name of Takeshi Kitano, movie director). The Asakusa Entertainment Hall offers daytime (11:40-16:30) and evening (16:40-21:00) shows. The ticket is priced higher for the year-end/new year as well as special programs: 3,000 yen (adult), 2,500 yen (student).
By train, Asakusa station on the Tobu Railway Isezaki Line or Tawaramachi station on the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line is the nearest station. By bus, get off at the Toei Bus Asakusa-koen Rokku stop. By car, exit at Komagata Interchange on the Metropolitan Expressway Route 6 (Mukojima Line). Parking lots are available in Taito Kumin Kaikan (The operation hours: 9:00-21:00. Parking fee: 400 yen/hour.)
