Shinjuku Gyoen is a park between Shinjuku Ward and Shibuya Ward. It occupies an area of 58.3 hectares. The shogun bequeathed this land to Lord Naitō of Tsuruga in the Edo period who completed a garden here in 1772. In 1906, it became a garden under the management of the Imperial Household Agency of Japan. Nowadays, it is familiar to many people. The garden blends three distinct styles: a French Formal and English Landscape in the north and to the south a Japanese traditional garden. The French garden has platan trees, whereas the English garden has tulips.
