About the NYK HIKAWAMARU
The NYK HIKAWAMARU was a luxury liner that was called the "Queen of the North Pacific Ocean", and it was built in the present Mitsubishi Heavy Industries for usage in the Seattle sea route. It crossed the Pacific Ocean 254 times and had a total of around 25,000 total passengers in its entire lifetime. Currently it can be visited inside of Yamashita Park, and in 2003 it was specified as tangible cultural property of Yokohama.
The inside of the ship was done in an Art Deco style by French craftsman Mark Simon. The ship is the only large vessel made by the NYK that survived being sunk in WWII, a "living witness to history". The whistle sounds at noon every day and it was recognized in 1996 as one of the 100 Soundscapes of Japan.
The ship’s total length is 163.3m, gross tonnage 11,622 tons. For 11 years and 3 months before the war it ran 146 times across the ocean and carried famous royalty such as Prince Chichibu along with celebrities such as Charlie Chaplin. During the war it was used as a hospital ship, but after the war it returned to being a passenger ship. It retired to Yokohama Port in August, 1960.
Inside the ship you can visit a first class guest room, reading room, and social room in the "Cruise Ship Area", and in the "Crew Area" you can visit the wheelhouse, captain’s room, galley, and the engine room. There’s also a room exhibiting the history of the Hikawamaru. If you go outside to the outdoor deck you can relax leisurely in provided deck chairs while watching the Yokohama Sea.
