What is Yama Jigoku?

Yama Jigoku is one of eight hot springs of Beppu Jigoku tour. The site became called Jigoku as steam is actively spewing among the rocks of the mountain. By using this steam, a variety of animals are bred at Yama Jigoku: hippopotamuses, peacocks, European flamingoes, monkeys, miniature horses, etc. You can experience feeding hippopotamuses, monkeys and European flamingoes by purchasing food for 100 yen. It is unique facility that you can view tropical flora and fauna thorough out the year in Beppu, where has four seasons.

What is Jigoku-meguri (Jigoku tour)?

Jigoku-meguri is a small excursion that takes you around eight natural hot springs called jigoku (hell). Those hot springs has been spewing hot clay mud and steam or gushing high temperature water more than 1,000 years, so that people could not get too close to those hot springs and called them jigoku (hell). You can view only these strange spectacles in Beppu, which boasting the biggest number of sources of hot springs.

Access

Get on the bus of the Kamenoi Bus bound for Kannawa at No. 2, 5, 41 or 43 bus stops of the JR Beppu Station and get off at Umi-Jigokumae or Kannawa stop (20 minutes) and walk one minute to the Oniyama Jigoku. If you go by car, get off at the Beppu Interchange of the Oita Expressway and go straight the Prefectural Road 11 to the Kannawa area for three kilometers (5 minutes).
