The shrine dedicated to the god of learning
Dazaifu Tenmagu Shrine is a shrine located in Dazaifu. Dazaifu was the local governmental agency of Chikuzen Province that existed in the 7th century. In the year 901 the Minister of the Left, Fujiwara no Tokihara, hatched a plot to get his rival Sugawara no Michizane demoted from his status in the court to a minor official post at Dazaifu. Soon thereafter Sugawara passed away there and was eventually enshrined here as a deity.
He is known as a god of learning, devotion, and good luck, and the shrine attracts over 700,000 people per year who come to visit and receive blessings. Because he is a god of learning, he is particularly popular among students who are preparing for exams. Dazaifu was also formerly a place of cultural exchange between Japan and other Asian countries so it is a famous shrine all throughout the Far East and many visitors from other Asian countries visit here as well.
There are a variety of rituals and festivals at the shrine, starting with the Usogae Ritual ("Lie Replacement Ritual") that takes place at the beginning of January. At the ritual, people ask Tenjin (the deified spirit of Sugawara Michizane) to transform all of the lies they made unwittingly in the previous year into sincerity and good fortune for the year to come. There is also the Onisube which is a massive ritual involving a fire that is designed to prevent disasters and bring good luck. In September is the Fudezuka Festival in which old writing brushes are buried and given "thanks" for their usefulness, in order to pray for further success in calligraphy. There is also the Jinkoshiki Taisai which is held to pray for peace in the Imperial Household and in Japan, and to show thanks for abundant crops.
There are over 6000 trees of 200 different species of plum tree on the premises, and it has become a famous spot in Japan for seeing plum blossoms.
