What is Kasii-gu Shrine
Kasii-gu Shrine is one of the 16 Chokusaisha Shrines (Shrine to which the Emperor regularly sends and envoy to consecrate it) and every 10 years, a royal festival is held here by the Imperial envoy. Kasii-gu Shrine has a 1800-year history. A small shrine built by Empress Consort Jingukogo to comfort the spirit of Emperor Chuai who passed away in 200 A.D., was said to be its origin. The main shrine was built in the year 724 and was rebuilt by Lord Kuroda Narikiyo in the year 1801. It is the only building in Japan made in the Kasii architectural style and is designated as an important cultural property of the nation.
The Sacred Tree and other Famous Features
On property are Ayasugi Sacred Tree, Romon Tower Gate (rebuilt in 1903), and Takeuchi-jinja Auxiliary Shrine which enshrines Takeuchi no Sukune, who is said to have fulfilled 300 years of longevity. Takeuchi-jinja Auxiliary Shrine is said to have divine favor for long lasting youth and longevity. The famous Ayasugi Senbei Rice Cracker is sold at the rest area. There is a also a place to get a light snack, as well as a smoking area.
300m north of the Honden Main Hall is the enclave Furosuidaijyojin where they have Reisen Furosui (Reisen Water of eternal youth). Kasii-gu Shrine has azalea from April to May, Iris in June and is famous for their seasonal flowers. Cherry blossom season is also a recommended time to visit. Hours of operation are 6:00AM to 6:00PM, October through March.
Kasii-gu Shrine can be accessed by train, bus, or car.
By train: 5 minute walk from Kasiijingu Station on the JR Kasii Line. 15 minute walk from the Kasii Station on the JR Kagoshima Main Line. 12 minute walk from the Kashiijingu-mae Station on the Nishitetsu Kaizuka Line.
By bus: 30 minute ride from Tenji Yubinkyoku-mae (Tenji Post Office) on the Nishitetsu Bus.
By car: 10 minute drive from the "Fukuoka IC" interchange on the Kyushu Expressway. 10 minute drive from the "Kashiihama IC" interchange on the Toshi Urban Expressway.
