This is a historic museum located in Hita, Mameda, Oita Prefecture. It is dedicated to Hirose Tanso and his brother Kyubei, who opened a private school called "Kangien".
Tanso was born in 1782, and since he was the eldest son, he was supposed to inherit family assets. However, due to health problems he transferred his inheritance rights to his brother. He opened the private school, where everyone was accepted on the basis of entrance examinations, regardless of status, age or academic background. At that time it was a rare thing, so he quickly became famous throughout the country.
While his brother Kyubei occupied himself with the family business, Tanso also participated in the fiscal reform of Hita.
The museum is closed on Mondays, but if a national holiday falls on a Monday, the museum will be open on Monday but then closed the following business day. The museum is open all year round. In February, March, October, and November, the museum is open every day. A discount is applied to groups of more than 20 visitors.
15 minute walk from JR Hita Station. From Fukuoka Airport, take a bus bound for Hita bus center and after 1 hour and 20 minutes get off at "Jyonai Mameda Iriguchi" bus stop. The museum is then just 5 minutes on foot from there.
